Matthias Church Budapest

Matthias Church (Hungarian: Mátyás-templom) is a Roman Catholic church located in Budapest, Hungary, in front of the Fisherman's Bastion at the heart of Buda's Castle District.

According to church tradition, it was originally built in Romanesque style in 1015, although no archaeological remains exist.

The current building was constructed in the florid late Gothic style in the second half of the 14th century and was extensively restored in the late 19th century.

It was the second largest church of medieval Budaand the seventh largest church of medieval Hungarian Kingdom.

Free organ concert on Sunday evenings
The organ of Matthias Church, the largest one in Budapest, has resounded for centuries in the best acoustic space of the city. In 1907, King Francis Joseph offered an endowment of 50.000 crowns from his private treasury, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of his coronation, for building a new, worthy musical instrument.
We hope that you will enjoy the magnificent sounds of the „King's Organ”. Have a wonderful time, enjoy our concerts!

Francis Joseph donated a new organ for the church to celebrate the 40th anniversary of his coronation. The "Royal Organ" was made in the Budapest workshop of the Rieger factory, according to the plans of conductor Viktor Sugár. The electro-pneumatic, four-manual, 77-register instrument was placed in the organ closet designed by Schulek. Pipes of the 4th manual were installed in the church attic and their sound was directed to the church aisle through a 14-meter-long wooden tube.

„This Church is the heart of the country, having preserved this noble role all through the course of history. At Mary's feet, in this church, lies the whole Hungarian history, with all its shine and dull, bright and bitter cold, joy and sorrow, virtue and evil, zenith or turmoil."
József Mindszenty
